The internal crisis within the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has intensified after a dramatic split emerged over the post of legislature party leader in the newly formed Tamil Nadu Assembly. The political turmoil has exposed growing divisions inside the party following its disappointing performance in the 2026 Assembly elections.

The conflict became public during the first session of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly when two rival factions of AIADMK MLAs submitted separate letters to the pro-tem Speaker claiming leadership rights. One faction backed party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, while another larger group supported senior leader S. P. Velumani as the legislature party leader.

According to reports, around 30 AIADMK MLAs aligned with leaders C. Ve. Shanmugam and Velumani submitted signatures in favour of Velumani, while only about 17 legislators backed Palaniswami. The rebel faction also proposed former minister C. Vijayabaskar as the party whip inside the Assembly.

The rebellion is seen as a major setback for Palaniswami, who has led the party since the power struggle that followed the death of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. Political observers believe the latest crisis reflects dissatisfaction among party MLAs after AIADMK managed to win only 47 seats in the 2026 Assembly elections.

The split has also sparked speculation that sections of the AIADMK may move closer to the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam led by actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay. Reports suggest several rebel MLAs are open to supporting the new government, further weakening the AIADMK’s position as an opposition force.

The current developments have drawn comparisons to the historic splits within AIADMK after the death of party founder M. G. Ramachandran in 1987 and after Jayalalithaa’s passing in 2016. Political analysts warn that the party could once again be heading toward a formal division if the leadership dispute is not resolved quickly.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Assembly is preparing for crucial proceedings, including a floor test for the Vijay-led government. The unresolved AIADMK leadership issue is expected to play a major role in shaping the future political dynamics of the state.
