The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is facing a major internal crisis following sensational revelations that marquee players Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman were not medically fit during their T20 World Cup selection. Despite carrying significant injuries, both were cleared to play, sparking a heated debate over the team's medical protocols.

Medical Panel Exposes Selection Oversight

According to sources within the PCB, UK-based sports physiotherapy expert Dr. Javed Mughal raised red flags regarding the fitness levels of both players post-tournament. The report suggests that Babar and Fakhar had not fully recovered from their respective injuries before the marquee event began.

The controversy gained momentum after senior selector Aaqib Javed questioned the integrity of the selection process during a recent press conference. Babar Azam's performance reflected these struggles, as the former captain managed only 91 runs in six matches during the tournament.

Hamstring Injuries and Physio Allegations

The situation intensified when Babar Azam opted out of the National T20 Championship, citing a severe hamstring issue that was initially underestimated. Similarly, Fakhar Zaman has been battling recurring fitness problems for several months, affecting his availability for key series.

Questions are now being directed at team physio Cliff Deacon. While the selection committee claims they received fitness clearances, critics allege that Deacon’s close rapport with the players may have led to lenient medical evaluations.

Road to Recovery and PSL 2024

Babar Azam is currently undergoing intensive rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy under strict medical supervision. He is expected to lead Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), starting March 26, provided he passes the final fitness test.

Fakhar Zaman, who missed the ODI series against Bangladesh, recently claimed on social media that he is regaining match fitness. The absence of both stars was felt heavily during Pakistan's recent 1-2 series loss to Bangladesh.
